Hence, Islam emphasises the importance of seeking knowledge, which can be adopted from secular sources, including non-Muslims. Such dedication to the production and promotion of knowledge would not only benefit Muslims, but the entire human race, insofar as it aimed at improving the human condition and contributing to the spread peace on earth.

Islam insists that academic research must be guided by ethical principles and responsibility. Early scholars, such as Ibn Sina , also known as Avicenna — a polymath, physician and philosopher — faced this moral dilemma when he refused to concoct a recipe for poison, even though he could easily complete that task. In contrast to the tendency of Western universities to combine knowledge production with profit-driven ventures and colonial expansion — and thus to regard research as limitless, because the will-to-profit is boundless — the Islamic approach to knowledge production emphasises a more balanced, constrained approach.

It is therefore forbidden to hurt or kill animals for sport. There remain red lines that cannot be crossed. Concerning the conduct of war, for instance, there are things that are absolutely prohibited.
